Travel Magazines Demonstrated High Uptime But Low Performance

Travel and trade magazines and journals, newspapers providing quality content to readers, sophisticated travelers and retailers, are integrating into all government, tour operators, hotel and product marketing and PR campaigns. They promote companies, destinations and governments relevant developments geared to tourism. Due to the vast possibilities of the World Wide Web, this audience is almost unlimited.  The Web traffic load this sector experiences during summer high season significantly increases, but are they ready to handle the load?

We benchmarked the performance of 19 online travel publications. We measured availability and response time metrics during nine days and then sorted websites from best to worst in each category. In terms of availability we got the following picture:

Trav

Most websites demonstrate 100 percent uptime. The worst was “Travel & Leisure” magazine, one of the most popular general travel and trade publications, was only available 93.4 percent of the time during the nine days.  This means that the site was unavailable to readers for almost 15 hours. Moreover, it showed 100 percent availability only one day out of the nine reviewed.

Info Hub Special Travel Guide also failed to deliver full service. Info Hub Travel was off for about 4.5 hours.

In the response time category the best sites were Merian, TNT Travel Down Under and Concierge.com.  Again, Travel and Leisure was among the slowest loading websites following Executive Travel, which was available 100 percent of the time but was very slow to load for readers.  The implications of slow upload factually means low availability and traditionally Web visitors switch to other websites when the page loads too slowly.

Tarv2

Improving on-line availability and performance is a continuous effort. Low uptime and speed indicate the need for additional investment into infrastructure – for example finding a better hosting provider, upgrading servers or improving software architecture. Otherwise, the odds are high that the website is losing customers and negatively affecting the company’s reputation.

Internet Service Providers Ranking by Uptime and Availability

Our community was frequently called upon to perform a research on uptime and availability of different web hosting providers. We were waiting to collect a sufficient amount of data and gain larger coverage before publishing such a report. Now we are ready to do this and we hope that it will be useful to our users.

Considering the amount of websites we are monitoring, we selected sites that belong to large Internet Service Providers (ISP). It was interesting for us to analyze which ISPs are the most popular providers for our community. The top 20 hosting providers are listed bellow. The Test Count column shows how many tests (typically 1 test = 1 website) were added to Mon.itor.Us by our users.

20 Most Popular ISPs on Mon.itor.Us

The most popular providers were New Dream Network (www.dreamhost.com), The Planet (www.theplanet.com), and 1&1 Internet (www.1and1.com or www.1und1.de), followed by Everyones Internet (www.ev1.net) and GoDaddy (www.godaddy.com).

Next, for the top 60 most popular ISPs we performed further analysis. In our research we includes only providers with at least 40 websites we are monitoring. We calculated consolidated uptime of all the sites that belong to each of these ISPs. The table bellow shows uptimes measured in May, 2007 per 20 top web hosting providers sorted from best to worst:

Top 20 High Uptime ISPs (May, 2007)

1&1 Internet was on top in May (www.1and1.com) , followed by CrystalTech (www.crystaltech.com) , Dedibox (www.dedibox.fr) and MediaTemple (www.mediatemple.net). Certainly uptime for each individual site depends on many factors, but consolidated uptime for all websites/blogs for a particular hosting provider demonstrates ISP’s service quality.

We analyzed an aggregated response time averaged for all hosts per each hosting provider. Following is the list of Top 20 hosting providers:

Top 20 Fastest ISPs (May, 2007)

Ranked highest in this list were Hetzner Online (www.hetzner.de), LeaseWeb (www.leaseweb), HostForWeb (www.hostforweb.com), Strato (www.strato.de) and pair Networks (www.pair.com). Again, the response per individual site depends heavily on several parameters such as hardware, application, OS, etc. But statistically consolidated performance also shows how well an ISP is connected to the Internet.

There were companies which are both in top 20 Uptime and Fastest ISP lists:

We are going to publish similar reports periodically. The more our users add sites for monitoring, the better coverage we will provide in our research. I hope our community will find them useful. We invite you to discuss our findings via our forums. Our images can also be freely used (provided you post the Monitis logo and there is a link to our site).

Not all European Tourist Boards are ready for summer rush

Tourists do lots of research on the web before travel and National Tourist Boards websites are the number one web destinations. How well are National Tourism Boards’ websites prepared to handle the thick of vacation season? Mon.itor.US conducted research to check the speed and availability of European country official websites out of several locations in the US and Europe.

National Tourist Boards’ websites have become significant gateways.  They make a first impression by sharing information across geographical, linguistic and technological boundaries, creating the electronic market place. A good performing website entices potential tourists to use their services and come to their country.

Effective websites show close to 100 percent availability. MonitorUS has been monitoring European National Tourist Board sites from 1-12 June 2007, demonstrating the following uptime results:

100.jpg

91.5% means Finland www.visitfinland.com scored a 91.5 percent ranking meaning that the site was down more than a day during the monitored period.  A score of 98 percent represents downtime of approximately 6 hours during 12 days!  How many customers were lost during that time? High uptime is not only possible it is absolutely necessary to be effective. Finland www.visitfinland.com and Denmark www.visitdenmark.com official tourism sites seems had serious issues during the first twelve days in June.

Mon.itor.Us also measures website upload speed which is an important metric in delivering quality web experience. Web customers aren’t going to stand in the “queue” to reach you. Slow loading means longer time waiting in the line. The table below presents official websites’ load speed for 12 days.

ms.jpg

Several sites demonstrated poor speed that represents the equavalent of being down.  The worst sites were Greece and the UK.

On-going monitoring and measurement of website uptime and load speed is a best practice if businesses want to be competitive. It is not only important to monitor your own sites but also sites that directly or indirectly affect your performance. For example, tour operators or hotels’ website traffic may be significantly affected by the Country Tourist websites low availability.
